Milliarcsecond Astrometry for the Galilean Moons Using Stellar Occultations

چکیده
Abstract A stellar occultation occurs when a Solar System object passes in front of star for an observer. This technique allows the sizes and shapes occulting body to be determined with kilometer precision. In addition, this constrains body’s positions, albedos, densities, so on. context Galilean moons, these events can provide their best ground-based astrometry, uncertainties order 1 mas (∼3 km at Jupiter’s distance during opposition). We organized campaigns successfully observed by Io (JI) 2021, one Ganymede (JIII) 2020, Europa (JII) 2019, stations North South America. also re-analyzed two previously published events: 2016 another 2017. then fit known 3D shape satellite determine its center figure. resulted astrometric positions milliarcsecond level. The obtained from occultations used together dynamical models ensure highly accurate orbits moons. These help planning future space probes aiming Jovian system, such as JUICE ESA Clipper NASA. They allow more efficient flyby maneuvers.

The Galilean Moons and the Nature of their Magnetic Fields
The Galileo spacecraft’s magnetometer data allowed for an understanding of the Galilean satellites’ internal magnetic fields. My objective was to learn the nature of these fields and see if they are consistent with geological and observational data by reviewing all relevant papers and seeking parallels or inconsistencies between them. The results show that Europa and Callisto have internal brin...
متن کاملImpact-Generated Dust Clouds Surrounding the Galilean Moons
Tenuous dust clouds of Jupiter’s Galilean moons Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto have been detected with the in-situ dust detector on board the Galileo spacecraft. The majority of the dust particles have been sensed at altitudes below five radii of these lunar-sized satellites. We identify the particles in the dust clouds surrounding the moons by their impact direction, impact velocity, and ma...
متن کاملSub-milliarcsecond precision spectro-astrometry of Be stars
Context. The origin of the disks around Be stars is still not known. Further progress requires a proper parametrization of their structure, both spatially and spectrally. This is challenging as the disks are very small. Aims. Here we assess whether a novel method is capable of providing these data. Methods. We obtained spectro-astrometry around the Paβ line of two bright Be stars, α Col and ζ T...
متن کاملProbing Planetary Atmospheres with Stellar Occultations
Earth-based stellar occultations probe the temperature, pressure, and numberdensity profiles of planetary atmospheres in the microbar range with a vertical resolution of a few kilometers. Depending on the occultation data available for a given body and other information, the technique also allows determination of local density variations, extinction by aerosols and molecules, rotation period an...
متن کاملGOMOS: Ozone profile measurements by stellar occultations
The Global Ozone Monitoring by Occultation of Stars instrument (GOMOS) will be launched on board ESA’s Envisat satellite in late 2001. GOMOS will measure ozone and trace gases in the atmosphere by detecting the absorption of star light in UV, visible and infrared wavelengths. GOMOS will deliver ozone and other trace gas profiles at altitudes 15-90 km with a good vertical resolution and with a g...
